Tissue Engineered Skin: Apligraf® Apligraf® Development.
Organogenesis was the company behind the development of Apligraf®.
The key characteristics of their product are that it is a
bilayer (epidermal/dermal) living product. It has appearance and
handling similar to that of human skin. The key components of
the product are the: stratum corneum, living keratinocytes,
living dermal fibroblasts, and extracellular matrix.
Below is a schematic of how Apligraf® is made. All the cells are obtained from the patient via a biopsy. The biopsy is then digested and the different types of extracted cells are then cultured before being seeded into the scaffold designed by Organogenesis and depicted below.
